Uzbekistan imported 421,900 tonnes of potatoes worth $34 million in January–June 2026, down 46,900 tonnes from the same period a year earlier, with supplies arriving from 11 countries. Kazakhstan dominated the flow with 337,900 tonnes, or roughly 80% of total volume, followed by Pakistan at 33,800 tonnes, Kyrgyzstan at 14,800 tonnes and Afghanistan at 13,500 tonnes. The decline reflects Uzbekistan’s ongoing efforts to expand domestic production, even as it remains the region’s largest potato importer. Competing with Kazakhstan on bulk supply is difficult given logistics advantages tied to geography and established trade routes, leaving a promising niche for Russian exporters in the seed and premium segments rather than in high-volume commodity shipments.

The structure of the market underscores Kazakhstan’s role as the dominant regional supplier, a position reinforced by proximity, transport links and competitive pricing. For other exporters, including Russia, the realistic opportunity lies not in challenging Kazakhstan’s volume leadership but in targeting higher-value categories where quality, variety and certification matter more than sheer tonnage. As Uzbekistan continues to develop its own production capacity, the overall import volume may keep contracting, making segment specialization an increasingly important strategic consideration for suppliers seeking a foothold in Central Asia.
