The Kamchatka region in Russia’s Far East is experiencing a significant breakthrough in local seed potato production. Over the past five years, the region has nearly tripled its output of domestic seed potatoes. In a parallel achievement, the range of cultivated varieties has more than doubled, expanding from just three to seven distinct types. This progress marks a crucial step toward strengthening regional food security and reducing dependence on imported seed material.

Scientists at the Kamchatka Research Institute of Agriculture (Kamchatka NIISKH) have been actively working to identify the most promising cultivars. From an initial pool of 40 tested varieties, researchers have carefully selected 18 new, elite samples that demonstrate high potential for the region’s unique climate and soil conditions. This rigorous selection process ensures that local farmers will have access to more resilient and productive varieties, further driving the growth of Kamchatka’s agricultural sector.
