  • 60-day crop is what northern growers need, says AAFC
  • 2 weeks: lag of a crop sown from seed versus tubers
  • 50 years: seed life in a refrigerator, says Dr. Tai
  • 90 frost-free days are typical of many northern areas

Mengapa ia penting?

Untuk petani
Northern and short-season growers: follow AAFC results before trying true seed; early sowing needs cold protection, late sowing needs early-maturing lines.
Untuk pedagang
Seed tuber suppliers to remote regions: true seed may become a low-cost rival over time; follow AAFC breeding lines for early maturity.
Untuk pembekal
Greenhouse and transplant suppliers: raising seedlings indoors was one of the tested methods; cold protection for young plants is the weak point.

Ringkasan 60 saat

Canada's federal agriculture department is trying to replace heavy seed tubers with tiny botanical potato seed in remote northern places. The central difficulty is time: a crop raised from seed runs roughly two weeks later than one raised from tubers, while northern growers need potatoes ready in about 60 days. Seed can be kept cold for around half a century and costs little to transport, which is the whole point for communities far from supply routes. Trials in Newfoundland found that sowing early brings larger tubers but kills many seedlings in cold spells, and sowing late saves plants but cuts the bulking period. Breeders are therefore selecting for quick emergence, early maturity and cold hardiness in young plants. Seed firms, northern food programmes and breeders in short-season regions should watch this. Caveat: no yield data from the Canadian work has been released, and the program is still at the research stage.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is testing whether true potato seed could help remote northern communities grow their own potatoes. The work involves researchers at AAFC’s Fredericton and St. John’s Research and Development Centres. The department described the project in a LinkedIn post in late September 2026, and the trade magazine Spud Pintar reported on it on 28 September 2026.

Most potatoes are grown from seed tubers. These are heavy and bulky. In remote areas the cost of shipping them can be too high, AAFC says. True potato seeds are different. They are tiny botanical seeds that form inside the small green berries of the potato plant, called seedballs. According to Dr. Helen Tai, the AAFC scientist who leads the work, the seeds are small and light and can stay alive for decades. She told Spud Smart that seeds can be kept in a refrigerator for about 50 years, so no large storage building is needed.

What the trials showed

Field trials in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, compared seeds sown directly in the field with seedlings started indoors in a greenhouse. The results show a trade-off, according to AAFC:

  • Early planting gave bigger potatoes, but many young plants could not survive the cold weather.
  • Later planting kept more plants alive, but left less time for the tubers to grow and mature.
  • A crop sown directly from seed was about two weeks behind a crop started from tubers, Tai told Spud Smart.

This delay is the main problem. “In the north, they need a 60-day crop,” Tai told the magazine. The breeding work now focuses on two traits: fast emergence and early maturity. Researchers also want better frost and cold tolerance at the seedling stage, which is the weakest point of a crop grown from seed.

The northern work is not new for AAFC. In 2021 Spud Smart reported that Tai was working with the Northern Farm Training Institute in Hay River, Northwest Territories, on true potato seed. The same report said many northern areas have about 90 frost-free days.

Mengapa ia penting?

For northern and island communities, potatoes are a basic food, but seed tubers must travel long distances by road, air or sea. A packet of seed weighs almost nothing compared with a load of tubers. If breeders can shorten the season from seed and protect seedlings from cold, communities could grow fresh potatoes locally at a lower cost.

The same traits could be useful further south. Tai says the work may give growers more flexibility around heat, drought and the time a crop spends in the field. No yield figures from the Canadian trials have been published so far.

AAFC breeders are selecting for fast emergence, early maturity and cold tolerance in seedlings. Published yield data from the Canadian trials is still expected.
